TOP FIVE TRENDING MOVIES OF THE WEEK
1. Danny Collins
Plot :
Aged, cheesy rock star Danny (Pacino) belatedly receives a letter John Lennon wrote him 43 years ago and has an epiphany. He quits his tour and lavish wild-man lifestyle to rediscover his musical heart and connect with the son he’s never met. What could possibly go wrong?
Verdict :
A Hugely, irresistibly enjoyable, with star chemistry to spare, genuine laughs and tears, and the bonus of apt Lennon songs on the soundtrack.
2. The Dead Lands
Plot :
Teenage Hongi (James Rolleston) is the only survivor of a tribe wiped out by the devious Wirepa. Hongi vows revenge and sets off on a perilous mission across the forbidden Dead Lands, an area ruled by a legendary cannibal warrior.
Verdict:
Neatly balances a folkloric coming-of-age tale with violent action thrills.
3. The Connection
Plot :
Magistrate Pierre Michel (Jean Dujardin) relentlessly pursues the heavyweight drug cartels of Marseille in the 1970s.
Verdict:
For all the charisma of its hero and villain, it falls down on its failure to resist cliché.
4. San Andreas
Plot :
When an earthquake hits the us west coast, an LA fire dept. helicopter pilot (Johnson) must save his estranged family.
Verdict:
If you crave Emmerich-esque disaster-porn with a mega body count, there’s plenty here to OMG at. But when it comes to character depth or plotting, San Andreas is a sadly familiar wasteland.
5. Man Up
Plot :
Jack (Pegg) mistakes Nancy (Bell) for his blind date. Nancy plays along — until the truth emerges and Jack flips out.
Verdict:
If it could decide whether it was a cute romcom or a dirty one, Man Up would be a real gem, but as charming as it is, it falls between two stools and never manages to, ahem, Man Up.
PS: Were you going to the cinema this week? You need to bid a watch for these movies. #Compiled by The Unibentalkingdrum.
